Isa pula menyampaikan kertas kerja bertajuk ‘Bangunan-bangunan Bersejarah’

.

SAHOCA 28: OBITUARY

FORM VB 1963, SULTAN ABDUL HAMID COLLEGE, ALOR SETAR
Seated from left: Mr. Khalid Halim, Form Teacher (No. 5), Mr. N.A. Ogle, Headmaster (No. 6) and Hashim Osman, Class Monitor. (No. 7 wearing shorts because his late father, Pak Man Gigi would not permit Hashim to wear trousers as he still considered Hashim as a mere school boy and not as a grown up school boy)

Second row standing from left: the late Mohamed Zainul Abidin (No. 6)

Monday 6th. June 2010 was a day to be remembered by the classmates of Form V B 1963 at Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Setar. At 2.00 pm, I received a call from Abdul Halim Abdullah informing me that he has successfully undergone his fourth angioplasty procedure at Institut Jantung Negara. He has experienced the narrowing down of his arteries and he has been strengthened with additional stends to improve the rate of his blood flowing to his heart. I hope after the fourth angioplasty procedure he would be prudent on his diet as we do really need him to continue his endeavour in fostering the communication gap between the classmates of 1963.

However my happiness did not last the evening for I did received two more calls from Abdul Rahman Md. Noor and Syed Sheh informing me that another classmate of ours, Mohamed Zainol Abidin has passed away peacefully at 5.00 pm. on the same day. Let us pray for the blessing of Allah that the late Mohamed would be placed among the faithfulls. Insya Allah

SAHOCA 27: ISMAIL IBRAHIM'S WEDDING FEAST

In conforming to our mutual agreement made on the 1st May 2010, the classmates of SMOne 1956 converged on Haji Ismail Ibrahim’s house at Lorong Sepakat, Jalan Datuk Kumbar on Saturday, 5th. June 2010 at 2.00 pm. After Halim’s Dollah’s departure back to Kuala Lumpur on the Thursday night (03.06.2010), I took over the role of fetching Bakaq Aloq Belat at his home in Bakar Bata.

Bakaq was at ease at the feast because he could converse in his mother’s tongue with his associate Mat Ka, Ismail Ibrahim’s son in law. Although Bakaq was close to Mat Ka, but he did know that Mat Ka is the son in law of Haji Ismail Ibrahim until he attended the wedding feast.

At Ismail Ibrahim’s house, Harun Ali and Shariff Puteh were already there to receive us. Later on, Pak Ya Kalut, Hashim Murad and Ad Tot joined us at the table. We were quite sad because the prime mover of our SMOne 56 third reunion, Halim Dollah could not attend the wedding feast. However, Ismail Ibrahim consoled us by telling us that he has another four weddings to go.

Hashim Murad could not attend our third reunion on the 1st May 2010 for reasons only best known to him although he did received our invitation. I failed to contact Hashim Murad by phone because he has changed his phone number. For our convenience, Hashim Murad furnished me with his latest mobile phone number. The irony of the episode was that I came to know that Hashim Murad is related to Bakaq only at the wedding feast. Otherwise I should have asked for assistance from Bakaq who could then effortlessly has contacted Hashim Murad. Whatever it was, our intention of having informal gatherings among the classmates of SMOne 56 has a very favourable beginning.

After the wedding, I have another surprise from Bakaq when he invited me for a cup of coffee tarik at Hotel Seri Malaysia. Since 1956, Bakaq has shown his natural flair in his public relation skills and at Hotel Seri Malaysia Bakaq did not fail to impress me.with his PR skills. He could even removed the No Parking sign at the hotel lobby for my convenience in parking my car. Even the very satisfying coffee tarik of Hotel Seri Malaysia Alor Setar was derived from Bakaq’s home brewed coffee. Adding to my astonishment, Bakaq even has his own personalised coffee mug stamped with his name ‘Dato’ Abu Bakar’.

Kudos to Abu Bakar Yaacob who hails from Kampung Alor Belat which only has the facility of KTM Railway Halt back in 1956 for the main means of transport to the outside world. While disembarking from the train during our university days, Bakaq used to jump from the train first when the train has slowed down for a very brief stop at Aloq Belat while we then threw his baggage down after him. Those were the days.

SAHOCA 26: TEACHERS' DAY

KHAS UNTUK PAK CHOY, GURU BERSARA

Kepada guru yang telah banyak berjasa,

Yang telah mendidik anak bangsa,

Menjadi khazanah nusa dan bangsa,

Kini sibuk mendidik anak cucu pula,

Bukanlah mudah nak mendidik manusia,

Lebih mudah lagi mendidik anak rusa,

Sekarang barulah Pak Choy rasa,

Kena buli dek cucu setiap masa,

Pak Choy hanya boleh bersara fizikal sahaja,

Janganlah pula bersara di minda,

Nanti rosak binasa ditelan masa,

Buat Haji Yaacob gelak ketawa,

Janganlah marah, hanya melawak saja,

Di Hari Guru, hari yang mulia,

Khas untuk Pak Choy, Guru bersara.

SAHOCA 25: CLOSER LOOKS AT SMI 56

During our SMOne 1956 Reunion in 2002 at Hotel Seri Malaysia, Haji Yaacob informed us that his utmost dream in life was to become a millionaire. We were baffled whether he really meant what he said. Haji Yaacob was a retired teacher but he does inherited some agricultural land from his late father. During my tenure as the District Officer of Kubang Pasu (1990-1995) I used to see Haji Yaacob coming often to the District Office to settle the disputes of land ownership with his other siblings.

When we enquired about the means that he would use to achieve his dream, Haji Yaacob gladly said that he has enough savings from his entire career as a teacher and also from the produce of his vast land. He has invested his entire savings into Amanah Saham Nasional. From his calculation, he would become a millionaire in a few years time based on the amount of dividends that he would derive from his ASN shares.

Sure enough when I asked Haji Yaacob about his dream in 2002 at our third reunion on 1st. May 2010, Haji Yaacob contentedly told us that he has already achieve his dream to become a millionaire. Apart from that, Haji Yaacob also told us that he has built his million dollar dream house in Kampong Sungai Baru and he has also acquired the disputed hereditary lands . We were really proud and happy that our classmate has achieved that status quo without being a businessman but instead through his sheer frugal thrifty way of life for the past fifty years.

Meanwhile in the same breath, we also wondered whether Haji Yaacob is really enjoying the fruits of his labour. Although Haji Yaacob is a millionaire but Haji Yaacob does not drive a car but instead travel around on his old faithful kapcai motorbike. His hearing is also impaired and we have to raise our voices when communicating with him.

Whereas in contrast we have another classmate Abdul Halim Abdullah who rides around on his superbike or his caravan visiting places when ever he desires. He would also go to any extend just to have his foods which he really admires such as Mutabak Pak Awang in Changloon. Halim rode his superbike from Penang to Changloon just to have the taste of Mutabak Pak Awang during the fasting month. When I asked Halim about the identity of Mustabak Pak Awang, Halim told me just to watch the mutabak stall which has the customers queuing to buy the murtabak and not the other way round whereby the murtabak were piled up queuing and waiting for the customers.

Apart from his mode of transportation and foods, Halim enjoys his golf and also his hobby of music and carpentry. He has also took up the challenge to become a Global Malay that has been ardently propagated by Tun Dr. Mahathir just by having Japanese and Australian in laws. The morale of the story is that every classmate of ours should enjoy the fruits of their labour according to their likes and fancy within the parameter of Islam when we have crossed the bonus age of sixty four and above.
