SIBLINGS 50: AQIQAH

On Friday, 9.10.2009 with Shiwar at the driver’s seat, we proceeded to Ipoh to attend the Aqiqah ceremony for Syun’s youngest grand daughter, Sofea . Sofea is the Perth born daughter of Adik An and Intan. Mek Tet and Wan Mansur were in their car with Mak Teh and Pak Teh tagging along.

Since Syun has agreed to give all of us a lunch treat at Meru, we scheduled our arrival to be before the Friday prayer. We were very lucky because we were served with a dose of Meru Beef Rice. The lunch has really tested our endurance to the limit. Only the stead fast could hold to his principle to the end. Only Pak Teh has passed the acid test by sticking to his white rice diet.
Wan Mansur and I failed miserably because we have deviated from our diet principle because we wanted to appease the mode of the lunch. Wan Mansur has even consumed the Tropica dessert covered by cream which he has been despising all this while. I even consumed the tender beef rice
which I am not fond of.
Anyway it was a very entertaining lunch which has been certified by the senior member of our delegate Mak Teh who is also a superb chef and Mek Tet who is also a good cook of beef rice herself. We were very thankful to Syun for giving us the opportunity to enjoy the lunch and also to accommodate our two days stay at Meru.

We went down to Ipoh one day earlier because I wanted to try my luck for the treatment of my consistent spinal back pain at the Klinik Law at Jalan Lim Bo Seng, Ipoh. After lunch at Meru, Nari brought me straight to Klinik Law and with the blessing of Allah, I really felt a tremendous improvement on my ailment. I did not stop to stretch my legs during my return trip to Alor Setar. I do hope that Mak Ngah would try her luck at Klinik Law.

That night, we joined Syun and his in laws for a genuine Ipoh Nasi Kandar Mamak. I really enjoyed the dinner but I did felt very sad because I could not join the Aqiqah ceremony as well as Syun’s Open House the next day. I have got to rush back to Alor Setar the next day to deliver a lecture to the Kedah Justice of Peace Association members..

From credible sources of information, I believed that it was quite an enjoyable occasion for the Haji Yaacob’s descendants at Syun’s residence the next day. 5/6 th. Hajjah Rodziah’s descendants attended the function together with the other descendants of Wa Nor, Mak Ngah, Mak Chik Sayang, Pak Teh and Pak Su. As with the customary of Haji Yaacob’s descendants tradition, whenever they were together surely the occasion would be very hilarious indeed. Surely the personalities of Puat, Mek Tet, Nayah and Sarah would always add much flavour and spices to the occasion.

Being an ardent member of the Hajjah Rodziah’s family, I felt miserably upset for being not able to participate in the function. Ati Wa Nor and Puat Mak Ngah made the day trip to Ipoh on Saturday just to grace the aqiqah and open house function. As such, Zam managed to hitch a ride back to Alor Setar with Puat on the same night and arrived at Alor Setar at 1.00 am on Sunday.

As age is catching up with us and time is also running short, I believe we should spare more of our quality time with our families. As Syun is also in the same age as mine, I strongly believe that Syun is sharing my feeling on our quality times. Syun has an abundance of resources but limited in his free time. Whereas I have an abundance of free time but with very limited resources.

As such, to show our appreciation and our sincere affection to the family togetherness, Zam and I would grab any opportunity that Syun initiated for any family gathering. On my part, I could not emulate Syun’s initiative towards his family togetherness with my side of the family because of my resources constraints. With this in mind, I will try my best to make every Syun’s family gathering as a memorable occasion to be cherished by every family members.

However I was not lonely for there were two other son in laws of Hajjah Rodziah who could not also make the cut. Mat Nami also shared the same fate as mine for he has got to lead his younger brother’s marriage proposal enquiry (merisik) party at Puchong which took place on the same evening. Whereas I believed Mokthar was somewhere in Bukit Mertajam for his usual official business.

I pity Mat Nami who has been caught by surprised because he unknowingly did not prepare himself well for his mission. Mat Nami and his entourage who were only clad in batik attire were received by the host family fully dressed in the traditional Malay attire accompanied by the proper number of gifts (hantaran) for the requirements of the engagement ceremony (adat meminang). Whereas due to some miscommunications, Mat and his entourage only prepared for the enquiry (merisik) ceremony level requirement with only a sole gift.

I think Mat and his entourage was in a quandary because they did not anticipate that the ceremony was upgraded to the engagement ceremony level. From my CNN source, I think Mat and his entourage turned the table back on the host by scoring a hat trick when they managed to increase the amount of the bride family’s proposal of the hantaran by one ringgit. This episode brought back the fond memory of Hashim, Syun’s buddy who increased the amount of hantaran stipulated by the bride’s father by such an amount that even astonished the bride’s spokesman who has never experienced such a voluntary addition to the stipulated hantaran amount.

My advice to Mat is to be always well prepared for the next level of the marriage ceremony which would be the akad nikah or otherwise Mat must make himself scarce for the occasion. Any way, I consider Mat was very unlucky because he could not share his embarrassment and predicament with Nami who did not accompany him for the ceremony..

So my principle of to be well prepared one step ahead of your opponent for any traditional ceremony still hold water. Lastly, kudos to Mat who could still held his head high even after the embarrassing episode and if you need any supporting hand, I would be ready to do so.

REMEMBRANCE 44 : SUHANA SIDEK

On Monday,(05.10.2009) Marini’s cousin Suhana binti Sidek has been conferred with the degree of Bachelor of Business Mathematics With Honours (B.Bus.Math (Hons), Second Class Upper by the University Utara Malaysia at its 22nd. Convocation Ceremony held at Mu’adzam Shah Hall, UUM Sintok.

To commemorate this special occasion, Suhana’s parents, her father Sidek and her mother, Salmiah has flown down from Bintulu, Sarawak by Air Asia on the 4th. October 2009. Ana’s brother, Suhardi has fetched Ana at KLIA who has flown by MAS from Bintulu on 2nd October 2009. Both of them drove down to Alor Setar on Suhardi’s MYV on Saturday 03.10.2009. Ana has got to conclude the sale of her previous car by getting the approval from Puspakom on Sunday morning, 04.10.2009.

Ana and her parents put up the nights at Marini’s house in Taman Mawar. Although Ana’s parents arrived at Alor Setar at 6.00 pm on Sunday, yet at 9.00 pm they proceeded to UUM Convocation’s Carnival, UUM Sintok with Marini in tow. They really enjoyed their visit to the carnival since they were back at Taman Mawar only at 1.00 am.. Although still having a hang over on the next day, they have got to depart for Ana’s convocation at 6.00 am. the next day.

Since they have come a long way from Bintulu, Zam and I decided to give Ana and her family a dinner treat at Nurha’s Restaurant, Jalan Langgar. We did not anticipate that they would be so exhausted from attending the Convocation Ceremony. Later in the evening, I was informed that their exhaustion were more because of their visiit to Padang Besar immediately after the convocation.

We scheduled the dinner at 8.30 pm. but Ana's family could only make it at 9.00 pm. Since our stomachs were grumbling, we started our dinner at 8.15 pm without Ana’s family. We has also invited Ani's and Mek Tet’s families for the dinner. Mek Tet and Wan Mansur joined us at the dinner but Ani could not make it because of the normal excuse of her husband’s prior commitment.

Anyway we were not alone at the Nurha’s Restaurant because we met Inspin’s personnel at Nurha with their families. They were Saimah and Suhaila with their families. At the first instance, I thought were pre arranged dinner by Saimah and Suzaini but instead they informed me that it was a coincindence between them.
After the dinner, we presented Ana's family with the farewell souvenir consisted of kuih bakar that we have bought at Shukri Abdullah's Restaurant at Jitra and emping kerabu prepared by Mak Teh. While at the Shukri's beehun soup restaurant, naturally it brought back fond memories of my schooling days whereby I used to take the Kubang Pasu bus for my journey to my alma mater at Alor Setar. The site of the restaurant was previously the site of the Kubang Pasu Transport's Bus Terminal.

REMEMBRANCE 42: RAYA OF THE KITTENS

In fulfilling their rotation consensus, Nana and her family spend their first day of Raya at Ipoh. Nami also spend the first day of Raya at Ipoh while Alun spend their first day of Raya in Johor. According to the rotation system, Shiwar and Marini should have spend their first day of Raya at Sungai Rajang, Sarawak but they have deviated from the arrangement for the 1430 Aidilfitri as Marini was having problem with her leave.

We have syncronised the rotation system so as to enable all our children and the siblings of Zam to spend their first day of Raya in Alor Setar at the same year. As such, they would have a year to be together and a year to be with their in-laws. Nana only came back to Alor Setar on the second day of Raya. She drove all the way as Jim was on duty on that day. Nami, Mat and Alin accompanied Nana in Alin’s car.

With the blessing of Allah, Zam and I did not have to prepare elaborate anti-boredom arrangements for the grand children for the last Raya. With the demise of Tam, we were very grateful to Allah for blessing us with three cute kittens who could successfully entertain the four kids for the whole of their stay in Alor Setar. To the grand children, suffice to say that this year’s Aidilfitri was the Raya of the Kittens.

On the fifth day of Raya, 24.09.2099 with Jim driving the Estima, the whole family was able to attend a wedding feast at Kampung Banggaol Besi, Pendang and later on proceeded to Pantai Murni, Yan to another wedding of Dato' Mohd. Noh Dahaya's children.

I told Nana that her children would enjoy the feast at Pendang because of the Silat performances that they have witnessed last year. In Pantai Murni, Yan they would surely enjoy the public play ground at the sea front.

We were hold up for about half an hour at Titi Haji Idris because of the arrival of the bride groom to the bride's wedding reception whereby there was an absent of proper traffic control by the wedding host

With abundance of puasa money which she could spend as she desires, Aisyah gladly offered to give us all a treat at the Giant's Merry Brown .

Nana has laid down the rule that only Puasa's collections could be spent by the children according to their wish while their Aidlfitri's collections would be deposited in their banks' account. As Aisyah has fasted for the whole Ramadan, she collected RM 180.00 as puasa gifts from her father Jim, grand mother Yong, grand father Yob and myself. Alya only managed to fast for six days while Afique fasted for 17 1/2 days.

Shiwar has presented Zam with a steamboat for her 60th. birthday. As all my family members were present on the sixth day of Raya, we did have a steamboat dinner on Friday night, 25.09.2009. It was a very enjoybale dinner for every member of the family as the taste of the Adabi Tom Yam sauce auspices of Syed Kamal was very tasteful to the youngs and olds.
