SAHOCA 16: BULLOCK CART

Last Thursday (23.07.2009), a scuffle broke out when the George Town Police light strike force personnel moved in to control the crowd that has tried to force themselves into the George Town Police Station. The crowd had earlier planned to bring in several bullock carts tethered to bulls from Kampung Buah Pala to join the 2 km. march to the State Secretariat Building at Komtar to hand over a memorandum to the Chief Minister’s office on the Kampung Buah Pala issue. The police has arrested 10 people but ironically none of them were from Kampung Buah Pala.

This episode brought back fond memories of my school days at Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Alor Setar. Those days, we really looked forward to 1st day of April as we could indulge in mischief through out the day. On that special day, the teachers were also very sporting and we could get away with a lot of mischief without receiving any punishment from them.

The above Kampung Buah Pala episode brought vivid fond memories of the April Fool’s mischief whereby the Sixth Formers who came to school riding on a bullock cart. The leader of the group was the late Ramli Maidin, the former Principal of Yayasan Saad College, Malacca. On the bullock carts were his compatriots comprising Rashid Manaff, Ridzuan Murad, Mohammad Zainol Abiidin and Halim Abdullah.

As in the case of Kampung Buah Pala, the bullock cart chartered by Ramli Maidin on Thursday, 1st. April 1965 created havoc as it blocked the smooth traffic flow of the students coming to school in the morning. As the College internal road was very narrow, no other mode of transport could by pass the bullock cart. However due to their precise planning Ramli and his group arrived at their classroom on the dot. Whereas all the other students who were behind their bullock cart has to provide a lot of explaining to the prefects as they arrived late at their classes.

After a span of forty five years, kudos to the bulls and their carts who still has the ability to create havoc in the 21st. century.

  1. Great.. i remember the incident... i was one of the students on the bullock cart... it was fun.. we contributed 10 cents each for the ride... however, i feel things went a bit too far when at the end of the day all the bicycle tyres in the bike shed were flat.... and all the cyclists have to push their bicycles to town to pump their tyres. I remember seeing long queues along the road from kolej to the bicycle shops. I am amazed how the culprit/s managed to release the air from all the bicycle tyres.. without being spotted!! may be with the help of some teachers... i wonder... and also do you remember how (the late)mr Edgars car (a white jag)was painted on april fools day... halim

  2. Halim, it never came across my mind that a passenger of the bullock cart would read my blog. I am overwhelmed by your response because the contents of my 'bullock cart' were based entirely based on my my flimsy memories. I just put the names of the bullock cart passengers based on the assumption that they were Ramly Mydin's cronies and I never knew that you were one of the his cronies.

Yes I do remember that the late Mr Edgar's Volvo 122 was painted with the words 'Just Married' as Mr Edgar was still an antertu in 1965. Those days, we could get away with anything during April Fool's day. I fact we were already implementing 1 Malaysia concept during our school days.
